'Why is she in her underwear?' Twitter uproar over Beyonce’s Time magazine cover

It’s one of the most sought-after magazine covers of the year, and this year, Beyonce was one of the people chosen for the prestigious spot.

But when Time's ‘100 most influential’ issue hit newsstands on Thursday featuring Queen Bey on the cover, it started an online storm.

Hordes of commentators took to social media to lambast the magazine for the singer's outfit, or rather, lack of it.

Twitter was buzzing with angry comments. 'Couldn't Beyoncé have worn clothes for her cover?' says one.

'Beyoncé...most influential person of 2014. Great, well done. But why does she have to be in her underwear?,' tweets another.

Even her loyal fans had something to say about it. 'I absolutely LOVE Beyonce but that outfit is SO Miley Cyrus,' is one fan's response.

The controversial cover also had bloggers tapping away furiously.

'Thigh-high boots, corsets, the teeniest of short shorts may be Beyoncé's look du jour, but do they really have a place on Time magazine's cover?' wrote blogger Brogan Driscoll on the Huffington Post.

'Bey says Time magazine's recognition is important "because it's not about fashion or beauty or music; it's about the influence I've had on culture." So why does she have to come half-dressed?' she adds.

The short profile written on the star, by Beyonce’s friend and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, begins: 'Beyonce doesn’t just sit at the table. She builds a better one. Today she sits at the head of the boardroom table at Parkwood Entertainment.'

As the magazine is celebrating the star’s business achievements and successes, many asked if an image of the star in her underwear was appropriate.

'You decide she's the most influential person. In the world. And then you let her grace your cover in her underwear. You don't see how pathetic that is?' reader Elisavet Papoutsi wrote on TIME's Facebook page.

Why is Beyoncé in her bra and pants on the cover of time magazine, while all the men are pictured looking bloodily (sic) intellectual,' tweets journalist Sarah Vine.

'IMO it looks really sleazy and slutty and she is a mother that needs to be a better role model,' writes another.
